Reliance Jio could launch its 5G mobile phones along with 5G in India by April 2020 with the aim of making the 5G network available to all in the country.
According to a new report, the Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio telcom is already working on a 5G capable phone and plans to launch the device along with 5G services by April 2020. The company is currently in talks with smartphone vendors to make the 5G smartphone, says the report.
While details regarding the Jio 5G phones have not been disclosed, the 5G phones are expected to fall into the affordable segment, much like the existing Jio mobile phones.
“This will be slightly different than what Jio had done when it launched 4G services in 2016 September while 4G handsets it launched much later. They will replicate their 4G mobile services and feature phone model. In 5g technology as well but the service and handset will be together,” source told the publication. Just like the 4G, Jio aims to disrupt the 5G market as well with its services in 2020.
Jio 5G launch with 5g JioPhone
Jio would not only challenge the telecom operators with its 5G services. But it will also be a threat to Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi that have plans to launch 5G handsets in India. That will not be the case this time as Jio wants to start the 5G revolution Thus, plans to launch a 5G device at the same time.
It will, of course, also be competing with carriers such as bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea in the 5G services sector. Airtel and others also plan on bringing 5G services to its customers in 2020, but not before Jio’s rollout.
Reliance entered the Indian telecommunications market in 2016 and took the country by storm. It currently has over 280 million users and is the third largest telco in India. The company has also launched other services such as the GigaFiber broadband service. Its Jio Phone and Jio Phone2 brought 4G connectivity, WhatsApp, Facebook and Google services to the masses.
Jio would begin the roll out of 5G services once the spectrum auction takes in place in July in India and the ecosystem is developed for the services. As per the report, Jio may launch its 5G handsets simultaneously with the launch of the 5G services so that the users do not face any problems in experiencing the high-speed 5G services of the company due to lack of 5G phones.
